Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How Does Spray Tanning Work?

A: The solution used in spray tanning is called Dihydroxyacetone or DHA. DHA is a

colorless sugar that interacts with the skin cells located in the stratum corneum of

the epidermis (the upper and outermost layer of your skin). As the sugar interacts

with the dead skin cells, a color change occurs. This change usually lasts about

five to seven days from the initial application. DHA has been in use since the 60s

when it was first approved for cosmetic application by the Food and Drug

Administration.

Q: Will being spray tanned cause my skin to look orange?

A: There are two main factors that can cause the orange undertones that you see

with spray tanning. First is too much DHA applied to your skin. Either there were

too many applications or too high a concentration of DHA in a single application.

The other factor is the balance of your skin’s PH level. A true professional knows

how to identify and prevent these combinations from occurring with your tan.

Q: How long does it take to be spray tanned?

A: We use a High-Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) turbine unit to do your spray tan.

We can do a tan in about 15 minutes however we usually take 15 to 20 minutes

to be sure that your tan is completed thoroughly. The time it takes for you enter

our location, disrobe, have a consultation, spray tan, dry, and re-dress is about

30 minutes.

Q: Best soaps to use before and after your tan

A: Anything oil free

 Cetaphil Pro Soothing Wash-Gentle and non-stripping

 Dr. Bronner’s – Pure-Castile Liquid Soap

Q: What do I wear for my spray tan service?

A: During the spray tan you can wear as little as you are comfortable with. Our staff

is very professional and discrete. If you wear a bathing suit it should be dark and

form fitting.

 After your spray tan you should wear loose, dark cotton clothing with slip on

shoes so as not to leave any marks or rub the spray tan off your skin. You should

also not reapply jewelry as it can scratch the tan.

Q: How far in advance should I spray tan before attending a special event?

A: If you are attending a wedding, party, or other special event you should be spray

tanned one or two evenings before the actual event. You should wait at least 36

hours before the event – this allows time for the tan to fully activate and settle.

You also have at least two showers to remove bronzers that may be left on the

skin so as not to stain your garment for the event.

Q: Best oil free exfoliant to use before your tan

A: I like to use plain sugar. I put some in a jar and use it in the shower with my body

wash.

Q: How long will it last?

A: Most spray tans last roughly 7 to 10 days, though certain factors can extend or

shorten that period.

Q: Am I protected from the sun?

A: No. Spray tan solution doesn't have any kind of sunblock in it. If you are going

out, put on your sunblock.

Q: Is there anything I should do to prepare for my spray tan appointment?

A: Most important is to Exfoliate and shave the day before (or at least 8 hours

before). This will get rid of any dead skin and provide a more even skin surface

for the solution. Also, make sure your skin is bare with no lotions or oils before

your appointment.

Q: When should I shower afterwards?

A: Wait a minimum of 8 hours or you can leave the solution on up to 24 hours

before showering. It's crucial to avoid any swimming or sweating, not to apply

any products or moisturize until you have rinsed your solution off. All of these

things can make your spray tan uneven or streaky.

Q: Is there anything I should use on my skin after my first shower?

A: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! This will ensure that your skin remains healthy

and hydrated, and that your spray tan lasts longer.

Q: What else can I do to make sure my tan lasts as long as possible?

A: While your spray tan is new, you'll want to avoid chlorinated water, as this can

make the color fade faster. In addition, cut the amount of shaving you do down to

a minimum, as this works as an exfoliant and will also make your tan fade. Avoid

any scrubbing with a loofah or washcloth. Blot dry with your towel when you get

out of your shower.
